1. What have you found most challenging as a leader?

As leaders of KN Website Design, we find balancing diverse client expectations with business goals and profitability to be a significant challenge. These challenges require clear communication with each other and clients. Additionally, we thrive on staying ahead of rapidly evolving digital marketing trends. To do this and scale the business while maintaining this quality demands continuous learning and strategic process.

2. How did you become a leader? Can you please briefly tell the story?

Both Kim's and Nick's journeys began in non-digital industries. Kim coached gymnastics and ran a gymnastics club. Nicks as a former chef and transport manager. Both in roles that required strong communication with both team and customer service.

Kim's expedience in the process of building and managing a business and its website, she unknowingly laid the groundwork for her digital skills. Selling her gymnastics business, she embarked on a solo travel adventure across Australia, creating a travel blog.

Nick's career focused on managing people and logistics, but his leadership and problem-solving abilities laid the foundation for his eventual pivot. Encouraged by meeting Kim, he began learning about web design and digital marketing.

The couple attributes KN Website Designs' success to a strong commitment to learning, leveraging connections, and providing personalised, impactful services to businesses that value relationships.

This journey of leadership in this space is due to the ability to adapt and thrive on learning and growth. As evolving leaders in a competitive and rapidly evolving industry, the importance of persistence, their complementary strengths, and a shared vision have allowed the business to thrive.

3. How do you structure your work days from waking up to going to sleep?

Kim and Nick begin their mornings with some personal time by enjoying a coffee together. A review of the day ahead follows with a full client task recap. Being fully immersed in client success, they are the core focus of every day.

Kim will review incoming client care and focus on a task, either around marketing and social media strategy for the business or clients, while Nick will take on technical tasks, from updates and performance checks to website build or SEO strategy elements.

A lunch break and recharge allows a computer break, and a balance may even include a load of laundry or a walk to purchase milk for the afternoon coffee hit.

The afternoon for Kim may involve analysis of some analytics, a strategic partnership call, or sending a new proposal. Nick may collaborate with a writer or potentially work on some keyword research to enhance the copy for ideal Search Engine Optimisation (SEO). A productive afternoon also allows the couple to go for a walk along the Brisbane River, taking in the beautiful homes, runners, and some dog watching. A puppy in the future is on the cards.

As afternoons roll into evenings, Nick will hone his past life chef skills and make bangers and mash feel like a 5-star meal. Kim's side passion of property investing might present with an educational webinar or alternatively some light viewing with the Food Channel might follow. A weekend will allow for a shared bottle of wine on the patio and a movie for the couple to relax.

4. What's a recent leadership lesson you've learned for the first time or been reminded of?

A recent lesson Kim Amor and Nick Hosking have learned as leaders is the value of stepping out of the comfort zone to achieve growth.

Be it showing up at a busy networking group or pitching a potential client for high-value projects. Each step and experience reminds them that confidence in their skills and a belief in the value they provide can open doors to opportunities. The importance of mindset—trusting in their ability to deliver and adapting to challenges as they arise has also been a huge and constant growth in their business life.

Another key area for Kim and Nick is the critical role of communication and collaboration. Whether it’s with each other, clients, contractors, network partners and collaboration relationships, or coaches, open and honest communication is key. Being aligned on goals, overcoming hurdles, or just driving the business forward have all been huge learnings.

5. What's one book that has had a profound impact on your leadership so

far? Can you please briefly tell the story of how that book impacted your leadership?

A book that had a profound impact on Kim Amor and Nick Hosking’s leadership journey is Start with Why by Simon Sinek. The book focuses on the power of understanding your "why"—we relate this to both our clients and to our personal lives. Understanding purpose and the belief that drives actions keeps us inspired to continue to improve business owners' lives with what we can offer them.

Our commitment is to help businesses not just build websites but create meaningful digital footprints that drive growth and community connections.

The way we have structured KN Website Design is by being committed to our client relationships, building trust in a noisy industry, and tailoring solutions to each individual. Our awareness and decision to help rural communities, spans from Kims personal connection to Outback Australia. Her understanding of the unique challenges those businesses face is unique in the industry.

6. If you could only give one piece of advice to a young leader, what would you say to them?

Believe in yourself and take action even if it feels uncomfortable. Step out of your comfort zone, and continue learning and staying committed to your goal.

You also don't need to know everything upfront. Just take the next step in front of you and watch the path open up. Trust the process and make the best decisions based on the information you have at the time.

7. What is one meaningful story that comes to mind from your time as a leader, so far? KN Website Design had been experiencing tremendous growth, and the agency was gaining momentum. Having gained a solid reputation for delivering high-quality, personalised websites for local businesses, their next challenge would push them further out of their comfort zone.

A prospective client needed a highly customised website for their business that already had over a hundred pages and a strong history and reputation in the industry. Evaluating the project’s scope, the complexity of the requirements for this project were taking them to the next level. Turning to their coach for guidance, he reminded them of their previous experience, expertise, and specialised skills that have produced their previous quality of work and results. With a mindset shift to overcome the block of the “glass ceiling” and a push through the "ïmposter syndrome," they prepared a client proposal.

As they reflect back now on the true worth of their expertise, learning, and commitment to clients, they can truly bring forth the value their website and SEO services bring. The confidence they brought to the client meeting came from strong preparation and learning to understand their value. They took the time to seek guidance from a suitable mentor, had trust in the process, and had the courage to ask the client for the sale.

This resulted in securing their biggest client and solidifying their identity as leaders in the industry. With the mindset shift, they understand on a deeper level the exceptional value they can deliver and can empower others to see the possibilities. The effect of this one decision inspires them to continue to grow and evolve, and watching this client thrive has been a joy and a reward. For any aspiring leader, we implore you to believe in what you offer, surround yourself with guidance, and never underestimate the value of stepping beyond your comfort zone. The results might just surprise you.
