1. What have you found most challenging as a leader?
Sharing my emotional journey, without becoming emotionally involved with others
2. How did you become a leader? Can you please briefly tell the story?
I have always been seen as a leader. As a child, I was an aggressive leader, forcing people to listen and follow me. As I have grown and matured within myself, I have learned to be a more heart-centered leader, and some people will like and follow me while others may not. Learning to allow others to make their own choices is one of the biggest lessons that I have learned as a leader.
3. How do you structure your work days from waking up to going to sleep?
I have a full-time job and run a home-based business. On the weekend, I plan my week ahead, which includes family time, home chores, and activities that are required for my business. I also schedule fun times and time to meet friends. Once I have all the activities written down, I schedule them for the week. At the end of each day, I tick off the things I have achieved, and if they have not been achieved, I will schedule them later in the week. If there is no time, I will add them to the list of activities to schedule for the next week.
4. What's a recent leadership lesson you've learned for the first time or been reminded of?
Not everyone will understand my vision, so they will not buy into it. Not everyone is aligned with me and my goals.
5. What's one book that has had a profound impact on your leadership so far? Can you please briefly tell the story of how that book impacted your leadership?
There are so many books, but the one that really got me on a journey of heart-centered leadership was The Celestine Prophecy. It is about connecting with myself and also acknowledging that everything has energy, and I also need to set my intentions on a daily basis for what I want to achieve in my business as well as with the team.
6. If you could only give one piece of advice to a young leader, what would you say to them?
Do not see yourself as above the team, but rather as part of the team, and understand that there are also leaders in your team, and how you nurture them will greatly affect their future leadership. Listen to your team, and involve them as much as possible. If you make a decision that directly or indirectly affects the team, be upfront and tell them before it is a "grapevine" story and makes everyone feel undervalued and unmotivated.
7. What is one meaningful story that comes to mind from your time as a leader, so far?
That the office messenger has a lot of useful input into processes and how to reduce waste in terms of time etc.
