7 Questions with Jason Crawford

1. What have you found most challenging as a leader in the education sector?

Budget, declining enrollment and pandemic response

2. How do you structure your work days from waking up to going to sleep?

Answer email in morning and have set office times. Set aside time for family

3. What's the most recent significant leadership lesson you've learned?

Investing in your staff is important showing that you care and they are important

4. What's one book that has had a profound impact on your leadership so far? Can you please briefly tell the story of how that book impacted your leadership?

Good to Great by Jim Collins. Many times we have the right people in our schools but not in the right position or seat on the bus. We must match our good employees to their areas of passion and we can then have a great organization

5. How do you find and keep great leaders in the education sector?

Leader care and balance along with transparency

6. What's most important as a leader in the education sector for developing a culture of wellbeing in your staff and students?

Transparency and approachability and having all conversations even if it’s difficult

7. What is one meaningful story that comes to mind from your time as a leader in the education sector so far?

My former principal always told me we never know what happens in the 14 hours a day we don’t see our students. We must not view them through our own lenses we must develop strong relationships and trust and listen. We may never experience what they are experiencing at home and to remember Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. If a student is not safe and secure how can we expect them to be ready to learn
